1940 Stories from Illinois History Just One Name After Another In 1868, proud Illinois parents of a ten
pound boy at Ottawa placed an advertisement in a local newspaper in search of a
good name for the lad. Fellow residents may have been too busy during the period
of reconstruction following the Civil War to give much time to the problem, for
none of the suggestions seems to have been satisfactory. A history book gave the
answer. After studying it a while, the parents sent a news item to the same
paper, announcing that the little fellow's surnames would be Grant Sherman
Sheridan Rosencranz Hooker Burnside Fremont Stanton Lincoln Schuyler Colfax
Pusey. [page 72]
